So, the day started in utter chaos with the Park & Ride Scheme creating massive delays and frustration for everyone.
GAME 1 - Derby: Drew 1-1
The problems with the buses meant that we had to start our first game against Derby with only 7 players on the pitch (Derby did agree to reduce theirs to 7) with the rest of the squad arriving as the game was underway.
Not the ideal start and we went 0-1 down quite early on. But after a try from George we spent the entire 2nd half camped in the Derby half and whilst we battered away at their try line we just couldn’t convert our possession and opportunities.
GAME 2 - Silhillians: Drew 1-1
This game followed a similar pattern as again we went 0-1 down to an early score which stayed that way until half time.
Again we managed to pull the score level (I can’t recall our try scorer - sorry!) but neither team was able to add a further score.
GAME 3 - Walsall: Won 4-2
By far our best performance of the morning although, again we gave away a start to go 0-1 behind. After that we played some excellent stuff with tries from George, Drew, Onri & Harry Day who finished off a flowing team move which was great to see. Walsall scored a consolation with the last play of the game.
GAME 4 - Leicester Forest: Lost 1-2
Quite honestly we struggled against a very well organised & physical home side who out-competed us at the breakdown areas. They took the lead and went 2-0 up and although Didier scored a try to bring us back into the match we couldn't find a way to level things up.
GAME 5 - Barkers Butts: Lost 0-2
The last game of the day against Barkers was another where our guys gave everything they had but just couldn't break this tough opposition down. We conceded a try in each half to end the Tournament.
So, sadly we didn't progress and where we as coaches need to work with the boys is on competing harder at the breakdown and rucking in attack and defence to secure more ball.
Transport issues aside, the way the Tournament itself was organised and run was exceptional; played on big pitches which allowed for good running rugby. The commitment the boys showed throughout was fantastic and they continue to bond as a team and squad. They worked really hard for each other and they can be proud of themselves.
Thanks again to all the boys and to you for braving the cold on the touchline. I hope the transport disaster didn't completely spoil your Sunday
